7 Things That May Surprise You About Muhammad

OPINION of Lesley Hazelton

Everyone knows his name. He was, and still is, one of the most influential figures of all time, yet most of us have little real sense of the man himself. A favorite question of those asking about my new book, "The First Muslim," is thus what surprised me most in my research. Or rather, what might surprise them. Here's a shortlist:
1. He was born an orphan.

His father died without knowing he had a son, and Muhammad was farmed out to Beduin foster parents for the first five years of his life, returning to his mother in Mecca for only a year until she also died. The 6-year-old was left on the margins -- an outsider within his own society. He was put to work as a camel boy on the trade caravans to Damascus, and though he eventually made his way up to become a business agent, could never take his place in the world for granted.

2. He married up -- and for love.

The widowed Khadija was 40, he was 25, and since she was his employer, it was she who proposed to him. Some scholars have assumed that the "wealthy widow" syndrome was at work here, but early accounts indicate a marriage of mutual love and respect -- a monogamous one that lasted 24 years until her death. He'd mourn her until his own death 13 years later.

His nine late-life marriages were mainly means of diplomatic alliance and of securing his base, as was customary for any leader of the time. It's striking that though he'd had five children with Khadija (four daughters, and a son who died in infancy), he'd have none with any of the later wives.

3. His first reaction to becoming a prophet? Doubt and despair.

He was terrified by the first Quranic revelation, which happened on a mountain just outside Mecca in the year 610, when he was 40. In his own reported words, the pain was so intense that he thought he was dying. Convinced that he was either delusional or possessed, since it seemed impossible that someone like him could be a prophet, his first impulse when he found himself still alive was to try to finish the job himself and leap off the mountain to his death.

4. He led an early form of Occupy Wall Street.

His message constituted a radical protest against the corruption and arrogance of the Meccan elite. As both a pilgrimage and trading hub, the city had combined piety and profit to become a kind of seventh-century bull market. Muhammad's ongoing revelations demanded social and economic justice, and this provoked intense opposition from the city's rulers (as did his outrage at the preference for sons over daughters and the ensuing practice of female infanticide). The intent was reform, but those in power saw it as a subversive call for revolution.

5. He was a pacifist -- at first.

For 12 years, he took a proto-Gandhian stance of passive resistance to organized harassment of him and his small group of followers in Mecca -- "these nobodies" as his opponents called them. The Quranic revelations constantly urged him to "reply to foolish mockery with words of peace," to "pay no attention," and to "turn your face away" -- words one sometimes wishes more of his followers heeded today. When the assaults became physical as well as verbal, he refused to fight back or to allow his followers to do so. In the year 622, the attacks culminated in a concerted attempt on his life, forcing him into exile in Medina, 200 miles to the north.

His eventual decision to take up arms in exile was highly ambivalent - the result of political pressure as he assumed political as well as spiritual leadership. In fact the first of the three battles he'd lead against Mecca began as much by miscalculation as by intent. Yet even after his home city accepted his leadership in a negotiated surrender and welcomed him back -- the outsider transformed within eight years into the ultimate insider -- he'd never return to live there, but would stay in Medina.

6. He knew how to say he was wrong.

He acknowledged his own fallibility, most notably in the now infamous case of "the Satanic verses," when he tried to mend the rift between himself and his opponents by acknowledging their totem gods as intercessors with the one supreme god. When he realized that he'd been tempted into betraying his principles and that there could be "no partners with God," he had the courage and integrity to publicly declare his mistake.

7. His tragic failure came at the end.

He died without designating a successor. In the absence of a son, many thought it crucial that he make his wishes unequivocally clear, but though his final illness lasted 10 days (the duration and symptoms seem to indicate bacterial meningitis), he never did so. Ironically, the prophet of unity -- one god, one people -- thus paved the way for the divisiveness between Sunni and Shiite that persists today.

Women Rights in Islam Some Opinions.

Published on 20 Jul 2013 : Islam is a great religion who teaches us the rights and obligations of human beings. Islam always tries to maintain balance of power by recognizing the rights of weaker population. Women, before the emergence of Islam, were considered as inferior creation. Men treat women in insulting and hated way. Muhammad PBUH identified the rights of women. Islam had given maximum rights to women and no religion or civilization can compete with Islam as far as the rights to women were given.

Islam is a golden religion for women and there are a large number of women all around the world who are converting to Islam day by day. The reason of popularity of Islam in women is very clear. It is the rights, security and importance given by Islam to women.

The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad
By Lesley Hazleton
(Riverhead, 2013; 320 pages)

Who was the first Christian? Many Christians would probably answer: "Jesus." But the Gospels make it clear that Jesus lived and died as a Jew. A better guess might be the Apostle Paul, whose letters reveal a community beginning to distinguish itself from its parent faith. But naming him would be just that: a guess.

If the narratives of Islamic origins are accurate, there is no doubt who was the first Muslim. Around the year 610, Muhammad began to hear a voice. In response to its revelations, Muhammad preached to his pagan Arab neighbors a message of submission to the God also worshiped by Jews and Christians. It took two decades and a long political struggle, but eventually Muhammad persuaded the Arabs to adopt his new faith.

Honor killing is in the Bible !!

Published on Dec 1, 2012 by MuslimByChoice : Many have been deceived through the media that honor killing is an Islamic practice just because some so-called Muslims have committed this disgusting and unacceptable act. But when people who have a brain, look into the Qur'an or the life of the last and final Prophet of Islam (may Peace and Blessings be upon him), it is nowhere to be found.

Some Christians however are fond of promoting this fallacy, even tho they have no evidence for it in the Shari'a. BUT it can be found in the Bible.

Kareena Kapoor has decided to convert to Islam?

Beautiful Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor (picture left) has decided to convert to Islam before getting married to actor Saif Ali Khan.

Kareena and Saif, the Nawab of Pataudi and a billionaire owning number of business conglomerates; will exchange the vows in a much-anticipated wedding ceremony at Saif’s familial home Pataudi Palace on October 17.

Before tying the knot, Kareena Kapoor is following to embrace Islam just like the Saif’s actress mother Sharmila Tagore, who converted to Islam and changed her name to Ayesha Begum before marrying Tiger Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi.

Most of the members of the Kareena Kapoor are showing anger at Kareena Kapoor’s decision to convert into Islam. But Saif’s family had clarified to the actress that unless she leaves Hinduism and embrace Islam, she could not become the daughter-in-law of Patadui family.

The issue Kareena’s religious conversion had delayed the marriage for months and eventually she has made her mind to embrace Islam. But unlike impending mother-in-law, Kareena Kapoor will not change her surname.

“Saif doesn’t want me to change anything about myself, including my name, after marriage. So I will be Kareena Kapoor Khan. That means I have the privilege of having two of the most powerful surnames in Bollywood attached to my name. My signature will have a triple K — KKK,” said Kareena Kapoor.

The wedding ceremony of Kareena Kapoor and Saif will be attended by family members only. The invitations for the wedding have already been sent out.

The Rights of the Husband and the Wife

What are a wife's rights on her husband according the Quran and Sunnah? or what are a husbands duties to his wife and viceversa?

Praise be to Allaah.
Islam has enjoined upon the husband duties towards his wife, and vice versa, and among these duties are some which are shared by
both husband and wife.
We will mention – by the help of Allaah – some of the texts of the Qur’aan and Sunnah which have to do with the duties of the spouses towards one another, quoting also from the commentaries and views of the scholars.

Firstly:

The rights of the wife which are hers alone:
The wife has financial rights over her husband, which are the mahr (dowry), spending and accommodation.
And she has non-financial rights, such as fair division between co-wives, being treated in a decent and reasonable manner, and not being treated in a harmful way by her husband.
1.     Financial rights
(a)   The mahr (dowry).  This is the money to which the wife is entitled from her husband when the marriage contract is completed or when the marriage is consummated. It is a right which the man is obliged to pay to the woman. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And give to the women (whom you marry) their Mahr (obligatory bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at the time of marriage) with a good heart” [al-Nisaa’ 4:4]
The prescription of the mahr demonstrates the seriousness and importance of the marriage-contract, and is a token of respect and honour to the woman.
The mahr is not a condition or essential part of the marriage-contract, according to the majority of fuqahaa’; rather it is one of the consequences of the contract. If the marriage-contract is done without any mention of the mahr, it is still valid, according to the consensus of the majority, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

First veiled news anchor appears on Egyptian state TV

Fatma Nabil becomes first veiled TV anchor in history of Egyptian state television after information minister overturns ban

 Fatma
State TV's first TV news anchor Fatma Nabil

A veiled woman, Fatma Nabil, anchored a news programme on Egyptian state television for the first time on Saturday.

Hosni Mubarak's former information minister Safwat El-Sherif, who is currently facing corruption charges, banned veiled anchors from appearing on state TV in 2002. Prior to that time, Egyptian news anchors were unveiled.

The rule change was made under the auspices of new Information Minister Salah Abdel-Maqsoud, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood.
Veiled women Nermine Bitar and Sarah El-Shinnawy were also given permission to appear on state television.

Fatma Nabil has been presenting a show on Masr 25, the Muslim Brotherhood's TV channel, for several months.

Soon after accepting, she started to take hijab (head scarf). It was a challenge but she observes, if being beautiful in the eyes of the Creator means being ugly in the eyes of the created then its worth it! Make sure you watch the end where she shares her experience with Ramadan.

Grace Halsell on Christian Zionist doctrine

By Stuart Littlewood | 12 August 2012

Stuart Littlewood looks at how American journalist Grace Halsell exposed the un-Christian wart among Christians, the “Christian Zionist movement”, which believes that it is “perfectly acceptable to give the green light to whatever it is Israel wants and then conceal this from the American people”, and that “anything, including lies, theft, even murder, is justified as long as Israel wants it”.

Not long ago I quoted American journalist Grace Halsell in an article about the damaging influence of the Scofield Bible, not realizing how sorely she was made to suffer for setting out the truth.

That article, “The Zionist cuckoos in Christianity’s nest”, showed how Cyrus Scofield corrupted the Biblical message and produced a propaganda classic that has been working its evil for 100 years.

Israel worship

Scofield, a convicted criminal and described by one American newspaper as “a shyster”, was commissioned to rewrite the King James Bible by inserting Zionist-friendly notes. The idea was to change the Christian view of Zionism by creating and promoting a pro-Zionist sub-culture within Christianity. The Oxford University Press appointed Scofield as editor, and the Scofield Reference Bible was born.

It introduced a new worship icon, the modern state of Israel, which did not exist until 1948 but was already being “prepped” on the drawing board of the world Zionist movement.

It appealed to the impressionable and was seized on by religious chancers who have used inappropriate methods to establish a large and dangerously un-Christian fringe to the Christianity movement. They call themselves Christian Zionists.

Here is how Grace Halsell explained the rehashed Biblical message:

Simply stated, it is this: every act taken by Israel is orchestrated by God, and should be condoned, supported and even praised by the rest of us. Never mind what Israel does, say the Christian Zionists. God wants this to happen…

Scofield said that Christ cannot return to earth until certain events occur: The Jews must return to Palestine, gain control of Jerusalem and rebuild a temple, and then we all must engage in the final, great battle called Armageddon. Estimates vary, but most students of Armageddon theology agree that as a result of these relatively recent interpretations of Biblical scripture, 10 to 40 million Americans believe Palestine is God's chosen land for the Jews.
The problem, she said, was the belief system of Christian Zionists. “They believe that what Israel wants is what God wants. Therefore, it is perfectly acceptable to give the green light to whatever it is Israel wants and then conceal this from the American people. Anything, including lies, theft, even murder, is justified as long as Israel wants it.”

Those pseudo-Christians, who would have us all believe that God is some kind of racist real estate agent, thereafter made her life a misery.

CODEPINK victorious over AIPAC assailant.

Article image
It is not every day that the voices for justice triumph over the actions of the rich and powerful, especially when it comes to the Israel-Palestine debate. That’s why it is so important to acknowledge and celebrate the settlement just negotiated by CODEPINK activist Rae Abileah and her lawyers after suing American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) volunteer lobbyist Stanley Shulster.
It all started on May 24, 2011, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was in Washington, DC speaking before a joint session of Congress. Abileah, a 29-year-old Jewish woman who has traveled to the West Bank, Israel and Gaza, was in the audience. She became more and more appalled as she listened to Netanyahu’s speech and watched our congresspeople giving him a stream of standing ovations. “I couldn't watch this hero's welcome for a man who supports the continued building of illegal settlements, won't lift the siege of Gaza, and refuses to negotiate with the Palestinian unity government,” said Abileah.
So Abileah did what most people would never have the courage to do. She got up and shouted: "No More Occupation! Stop Israeli War Crimes! Equal Rights for Palestinians!" And she unfurled a banner that read: “Occupying Land is Indefensible!”
She was immediately grabbed, violently pulled toward the floor, and gagged—not by the Capitol Police but by a member of the audience, Stanley Shulster, a retired attorney from Ashland, Oregon, who had traveled to Washington DC to attend the yearly conference of the Israel lobby group AIPAC.  An online bio for Shulster revealed that he was an unpaid lobbyist, a volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces, and a Navy veteran.  In his bio Shulster bragged that he “grabbed the woman who heckled the Prime Minister while he was speaking.”

CBS News reported the couple married in their teens and were together for 20 years, during which time they had four children.
They divorced in 1964 but "always kept in touch," according to the Associated Press.
The couple will remarry on Saturday, with four generations of their family as witnesses.
"It's every child's dream, every child who has ever been in a family where divorce has occurred, that your parents would come back together," daughter, Renita Chadwick, told the Associated Press.
"We are all so ridiculously excited. We're like little children again," said Chadwick, who is herself a grandmother.
Davis' previous wife died several months ago and in an phone call on Easter with Henderson proposed to her. She said, yes.

China's most incredible mother: Staggering story of the woman who saved 30 abandoned babies after finding them dumped in the street with the trash.

them to friends and family after she rescued them

A woman has been hailed a hero after details of her astonishing work with abandoned children has emerged.

Lou Xiaoying, now 88 and suffering from kidney failure, found and raised more than 30 abandoned Chinese babies from the streets of Jinhua, in the eastern Zhejiang province where she managed to make a living by recycling rubbish.

She and her late husband Li Zin, who died 17 years ago, kept four of the children and passed the others onto friends and family to start new lives.

Her youngest son Zhang Qilin - now aged just seven - was found in a dustbin by Lou when she was 82.

'Even though I was already getting old I could not simply ignore the baby and leave him to die in the trash. He looked so sweet and so needy. I had to take him home with me,' she said.

'I took him back to our home, which is a very small modest house in the countryside and nursed him to health. He is now a thriving little boy, who is happy and healthy.

'My older children all help look after Zhang Qilin, he is very special to all of us. I named him after the Chinese word for rare and precious.

'The whole thing started when I found the first baby, a little girl back in 1972 when I was out collecting rubbish. She was just lying amongst the junk on the street, abandoned. She would have died had we not rescued her and taken her in.

'Watching her grow and become stronger gave us such happiness and I realised I had a real love of caring for children.

'I realised if we had strength enough to collect garbage how could we not recycle something as important as human lives,' she explained.

'These children need love and care. They are all precious human lives. I do not understand how people can leave such a vulnerable baby on the streets.
